Our story takes place in the times of the great ideologies. The times of
the Cold War, when the world play ground lead roles were taken by the political
regimes. During the times of the world bipolar division by the iron curtain,
before the dusk of the historical events and before the definite victory of
the material over the ideological thinking.
"Eastern Block" examines the specificities and differences of living in totalitarian
and post totalitarian countries. The project is divided into chapters, each
dedicated to one of the Eastern European countries - Slovak Republic, Poland,
ex GDR, Hungary and ex Yugoslavia. The Czech part of the project was presented
as a pilot exhibition in year 2004 called "American night".
"Eastern Block" traces marks, which totalitarian past and change of the political
regime has left on our generation. The last generation that grew up under
the communist regime and that resembles totalitarian society, has an opportunity
to live major part of its life in a democratic system.
In our narrative we refer to real places and real events that are used as
initial motives of our narrations. The choice of the themes is not a representative
one. We do not judge the reality but only describe it. We construct it and
mount it, making it a variation and a vision of a concrete event. Our aim
is not a textual restoration and evidence of the historical processes. Our
perception of reality is based on authentic feelings and reminiscences on
the childhood.
Our generation of representatives from each country are featured as actors on the photographs and in the videos. In their narration they go back to their childhood, searching in their memories and restoring the events that happened, and thier present feelings of what had happened.
"Eastern Block" reflects experience of our generation with history.
